Fade Away deals with loss which is really just saying "change" which won't leave you alone when you really do want to be left alone.  I wrote the song four weeks before Katrina hit and the irony of the second verse floored me for a couple of days until I realized that the impact of the Tsunami was probably the original influence on the verse. I was really sad by how little we could do to help in the face of "real" adversity but I was heartened how many little steps were taken by "common" people really made a difference is many peoples lives.

Fade Away

What we know, together now

Were only leaves, from fallen trees

And what we see, forever now

On forest paths, that never last

Do you believe in angels, In this world we share

I think I’ll leave it to the angels, to show the love that’s there, deep inside

Storm clouds chase, a bewildered eye

From a tortured land, on shifting sand

When the waters, change the tide

Walls fall down, the city drowns

Do you believe in angels, In a world that’s gone so mad

I think I’ll leave it to the angels, to show the love we had, deep inside

When we turn, a wayward home

From plastic dreams, men’s machines

From the things, forgotten how

Were never free, can never be

Do you believe in angels, In the world that we made

I think I’ll leave to the angels, to show the love that’s saved, deep inside

Do you believe that forever, can be, for me

Can you believe that forever, will be, for me

And forever

Comes in the morning now

As my dream

Fades away
